Bald Head Island lies at the southernmost point of North Carolina's chain of barrier islands and capes. Because there is no bridge connecting Bald Head Island to the mainland, visitors and residents must arrive by boat. More than 10,000 of the island's 12,000 acres are permanently protected from development.

Golf

The George Cobb course offers views of the Atlantic shoreline, while winding around the island's maritime forest and 15 freshwater lagoons. It received a slope rating of 139 and 4-1/2 stars from Golf Digest's "Places to Play". Many of the holes are bordered by the natural habitats of herons, egrets, ibises, foxes and alligators.

You tee off at the Bald Head Island Club with your back to the ocean, and you're deep in the maritime forest by the time you reach holes five and six. The prevailing wind is right in your face on nine, one of the most difficult holes on the course. It's a long par four with a small landing area, and it slopes right and left with lagoons on both sides. Fourteen is a tricky read and a tough driving hole because the fairway slopes towards the water. You'll dogleg right, and if you hit it over the hill, two live oaks come into play. The elevated green slopes front and back, so it can be difficult to hold.

Bald Head Island offers new homes and homesites, shared ownership cottages, and resale homes and homesites. Neighborhoods are designed to accommodate homes, not parking lots and cars. The island's three residential neighborhoods are: The Peninsula, Cape Fear Station and The Hammocks.

Homes and homesites are available on the ocean, on the dune ridge, along the marsh and creek, in the forest, along the golf course or in the harbor. Most island homes feature wide porches, long roof overhangs and cedar siding, along with central courtyards, trellises, picket fences and connecting walkways.

Cedar-shingled cottages rim the 10-acre marina that anchors The Peninsula at Harbor Village, with rocking chairs lined up on each porch. Homes in Harbor Village are convenient to island restaurants and shopping, and many have views of the river, marsh and Old Baldy Lighthouse.

Fairways, freshwater lagoons, and maritime forests can be seen from the golf course homes. Homes in this environment are convenient to the Bald Head Island Club dining room, lounge and recreational facilities.

Harbor Village homesites start in the mid-$200,000s; Braemar, $400,000 and up; Braemar Highlands, offering ocean views from the dune ridge, beginning at $400,000. There are resale homes available as well.

Miscellaneous

The Bald Head Island Club has tennis courts, two croquet greenswards, a 25-meter pool and an elegant clubhouse at the golf club. A 10-acre marina offers quick access to the Atlantic, Cape Fear River and Intracoastal Waterway. Adjacent to the harbor is West Beach, a top fishing spot.
